Badminton Performance Centres

Following a successful bid Sport England has invested £1.8 million towards a £3.5 million programme, which will enable Badminton England to work with clubs, badminton centres and county badminton associations to establish a strong and vibrant network of forward thinking performance centre environments that are accessible and welcoming for all. The aspiration is to create a hub of badminton activity where players, coaches and volunteers can progress, reach their potential and satisfy their own ambition within the sport.

Performance Centres provide a platform to increase competitive opportunities and raise standards for all players. These environments operate at local community level for badminton in clubs and schools by establishing an infrastructure in order to nurture talent, including the identification of players, coaches, volunteers and officials.

BADMINTON England Performance Centres are integral to achieving the aim of improving the standard of players so more pressure is exerted on the top elite band. They do this by setting new standards in their operations, with particular emphasis on:

  • Identifying the right raw talent
  • Implementing the right player pathway to support player development
  • Involving the right coaches who:
    • Set the highest standards of professionalism
    • Are committed to all aspects of the coaching process (plan, do, review and evaluate)
    • Support players as they move along the player pathway
    • Commit to Continuous Professional Development
    • Contribute positively to a mentoring system
  • violability and access to the right level of competition

Lancashire has three Badminton Performance centres supported by a wealth of experience coaches and volunteers. If you would be interested in attending a performance centre then the relevant information and contact details are listed below:

In 2009 Bolton Performance Centre (Bolton PC) became Lancashire`s first Badminton England Performance Centre. It was set up by various representatives from Bolton Council, Bolton Lads and Girls Club and Lancashire County Badminton Association. Head Coach Alan Clarkson has been running the coaching side of the centre from the very start. During this time he has been adapting the coaching team, sessions and venues in order to enhance the whole experience for the players.

Working alongside Badminton England the PC has set the following aims:

To develop badminton as a sport for all and encourage the best players to progress up through the ranks at club, county and international level

To make England the world’s number one playing nation by 2016, demonstrating this by improved participation and medal winners

Bolton PC aims to achieve this by creating:

• A player-centred environment where their needs come first
• A focal point that links schools and other clubs in the local community
• A talent identification system
• A quality based environment that develops players, coaches, officials and volunteers
• A team of coaches who set the highest possible standards of professionalism in the areas of:
planning, delivery and reviewing of coaching, monitoring of player progress and Continuous Professional Development
